The West Texas city is located along the Rio Grande across the U.S.-Mexico border from Juarez, Mexico. El Paso was founded in 1680 and originated from Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission of El Paso del Norte that was started in 1659. The Compromise of 1850 annexed it to the United States from New Mexico in 1848. El Paso is one of the safest large cities in the United States. Points of interest are Ysleta Mission, El Paso Museum of Archaeology, the Cathedral of St. Patrick, Kern Place, Plaza Theater, McKelligon Canyon, The Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens, El Paso Zoo, Union Depot and University of Texas at El Paso.
