This lively city on the Meuse River was the birthplace of the Emperor Charlemagne. Liege, the largest city in and cultural center of Wallonia, is home to the Musee de l’Art Wallon, which has an outstanding collection of paintings by French-speaking Belgians, including Lambert Lombard, Pierre Paulus and Paul Delvaux. Other must-see sights include the Prince-Bishops’ Palace and La Batte market, the largest and oldest market in Belgium that stretches over a mile.
