A Roman monument and aqueduct built in the 1st century, the Pont du Gard spans 275m (242m and 142m for the lower levels) and feeds water into the city of Nimes. Constructed of limestone blocks, the entire structure weighs 50,000 tons, making it an impressive engineering feat at the time of its construction. Even after the fall of the Roman Empire and disuse of the aqueduct, the Pont du Gard remained relatively intact over the ages.
