Resting just northwest of Sonora, Puerto Penasco sits on the strip of land that connects Baja California to mainland Mexico and is considered "Arizona's Beach" because it is the closest beach to Phoenix. Popular due to it's pristine, clear beaches that have felt little commercial development over the 20th century, but there are currently projects to expand hotels, condos, and resorts near the coast. The area is extremely popular for fisherman, and there is even a fishing festival hosted on Navy Day, or June 1st. Many of the residents are American and the town is popular among retirees from all over the world. Most businesses accept the US dollar and there is even an English-language newspaper.
